Treasure jumps to NCAA Big 12 silver

With a gold medal on the line at the NCAA Big 12 conference outdoor track and field championships in Lubbock, Tex., Alyx Treasure's body was 98 per cent clear of the bar in the women's high jump final.

Unfortunately for Treasure, a 21-year-old Prince George Track and Field Club graduate, a piece of her leg wasn't so co-operative.

Engaged in a three-way battle Sunday for gold with University of Texas senior Shanay Briscoe and freshman Rachel Proteau, a teammate of Treasure's at the University of Kansas, Treasure clipped the bar with her leg while attempting 1.84 metres.

None of the three was able to clear that height and Briscoe cinched her fourth-straight Big 12 outdoor title because she was successful at 1.81m on her first attempt. Treasure made it on her second try and was awarded silver, while Proteau required three attempts at 1.81m to lock up bronze.

Treasure will now turn her attention to the NCAA West championships in Fayetteville, Ark., May 29-31. She will be trying to qualify for the NCAA outdoor championships, set for June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.
