While Alyx Treasure was jumping to new heights at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she was feeling the love from her Prince George hometown.
She received hundreds of text messages, emails and phone calls with words of encouragement over social media channels and she says that helped her achieve a personal best jump of 1.94 metres to reach the Olympic final.
This weekend, the 24-year-old Treasure is back in Prince George and wants to personally thank her supporters for helping her achieve her Olympic dream.
On Sunday, from 6:30-10 p.m. at the Coast Inn of the North ballroom, Treasure is inviting everybody to come for a meet-and-greet thank-you event. Tickets are priced from $5 for the event. Appetizers and drinks will be served and there will be a silent auction.
Treasure, who learned how to high jump as a member of the Prince George Track and Field Club, starting when she was nine, plans to launch a foundation next year to help promising local athletes reach their potential in sport by providing funding for them and their families to help reduce the cost of travel and participation fees.
Treasure, who lives in Manhattan, Kan., where she's works with the Kansas State Wildcats track and field program, is a spokesperson for USANA Health Sciences nutritional products and will conduct a seminar today from 1-4 p.m. at the College of New Caledonia lecture hall. The event is sold out.
