Locals win Special Olympics shootout

After losing their first two games on a rainy field in Delta at a B.C. Special Olympics soccer tournament over the weekend, it all came down to a shootout for the team from Prince George.

Tied 1-1 with Abbotsford after regulation time after Michael Harris of Prince George had opened the scoring, Greg Eveneshen ended the suspense with the only goal of the shootout to cinch a 2-1 Prince George victory.

Prince George opened with a 4-0 loss to Mission and then lost 3-0 to Delta.

The Prince George squad wraps up the season next week. The team will travel to Quesnel next Wednesday, then hosts the Quesnel team Thursday at 6 p.m. at Rotary Field.

Coached by Wilma VanHage, the local team also includes Ruth Caldwell, Chase Caron, Daniel Lafreniere, Gwang Yeon Lee, Audrey Nelson, Tracey Robinson, Spencer Rourke, Sam Russell, Marinka VanHage and Chris Zorn.

Let's go skateboarding

This Saturday, Prince George Rotary Skateboard Park is the place to be if you like skateboarding.

West 49, a nationwide clothing retailer, is sponsoring Go Skateboarding Day for an all-day affair that will include skateboard demonstrations, prize giveaways, games of SKATE (similar to the rules of HORSE in basketball), and a barbecue.

The Prince George event is one of 55 across the country which will run simultaneously.

B.C. Scotties rules changed

Curl BC announced Wednesday it has scrapped its 10-team round-robin format for the B.C. Scotties Tournament of Hearts in response to complaints from competitive teams which considered the round-robin format too lengthy.

The tournament will now be an eight-team triple-knockout with a Page playoff. Teams can still qualify the same way they always have except now there will be two fewer berths. One berth will go to the returning champion and two will be reserved for the two highest-ranking team according to the Canadian Team Ranking System.

Two open events will decide the five remaining berths -- three at the first event and two at the second qualifier.

Curl BC anticipated more teams will take part in qualifying events because the events will be shorter and that will relieve some of the financial burden on the players.

The changes will be in effect for the 2015 B.C. Scotties women's curling championship set for Maple Ridge in January 2015. The 2014 championship was held at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club.
