Two members of the Prince George Track & Field Club have reached the qualifying standard for the 2013 Legion Canadian Youth Track and Field Championship, Aug.

Two members of the Prince George Track & Field Club have reached the qualifying standard for the 2013 Legion Canadian Youth Track and Field Championship, Aug. 7-13 at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley, while several other athletes are close to locking up spots on Team B.C.

Omar Medina and Ryan Gaiesky have both sewn up their spots at the Legion meet. Medina met the standard after placing second in long jump at the 2013 B.C. High School Track and Field Championship on June 1, while Gaiesky qualified after running a personal best 14.88 seconds in the 100m hurdles.

The Legion Canadian Youth games are open to athletes under-16 and under-18.

Campbell rocks Masich

Casidy Campbell was one of the youngest Prince George Track and Field Club athletes competing at the Spruce Capital Invitational Meet last weekend, but she accumulated the most hardware at Masich Place Stadium.

The 10-year-old won seven gold medals in the 60m dash, 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shotput, discus and 800m race walk. Campbell also added a silver medal in the 600m run.

Campbell was the youngest multiple winner, but she wasn't the only PGTFC athlete to win several gold medals. For 13-year-old girls, Lindsay King nabbed six gold medals in the 200m dash, 80m hurdles, 200m hurdles, long jump, triple jump and hammer throw.

It wasn't just the girls who shone though.

Josh Hewitt broke the two-minute mark when the 19-year-old won the 800m run and 18-year-old Duncan Elliot earned five gold medals - 110m hurdles, high jump, long jump, discus and javelin. Zach Matyas also picked up gold medals in the 400m and 1500m runs and was second in the 800m run for 18-year-old men. Another standout performance was delivered by 15-year-old Keiran Leboe, who won gold in javelin, hammer throw, discus and shotput.

There were more than 100 athletes competing, mainly from the PGTFC who earned the top spot in team results. Nisga Track Club, near Terrace, edged out Quesnel Junior Secondary and Bulkley Valley Athletics for second place.

The next meet for many of the PGTFC athletes is the annual Jack Brow Track Meet in Kelowna, scheduled for June 28-30.
