Higher, farther, faster.
The sky's the limit as to how high, how far and how fast a committed track and field athlete can go, and with colleges and universities willing to offer scholarships as a reward for excellence, the Prince George Track and Field Club has a long history of preparing young athletes to take that next step.
Wayne Phipps, Jackie Richards, Angela Naeth, Josh Guggenheimer, Geoff Martinson, Alyx Treasure and Emma Balazs are only a few of the PGTFC alumni who have used their club experiences to advance to the Canadian and U.S university ranks.
Now in its 40th year, the PGTFC is looking for energetic kids as young as six to sign up for the new season. With high school meets and elementary school relays fast approaching over the next couple months, now is a perfect time to join.
On Saturday from 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. the club will host a sign-up session at Masich Place Stadium for new and returning members. Saturday also marks the beginning of the outdoor season for senior club members (13 and older). The under-13 club members start training outdoors at Masich Place Stadium on Saturday, April 19.
The first local event of the season -- the Sub-Zero meet -- is set for May 3. Prince George will also host the North Central zone high school championships, May 22-23 and the annual Spruce Capital meet, June 7-8.
Season fees range from $100 for Track Rascals (six- to eight-year-olds) to $150 (nine- to 12-year-olds) and $175 (13 and older). The club charges $50 for high school athletes who want to train with the club leading up to the B.C. high school provincial championships, May 29-31 in Langley. New members can sign up at any club practice during the season.
