Shelby Jansen sprinted to the finish line to capture the 400m dash title on the weekend at the third annual Battle of the Borders high school track and field meet in Kamloops.
The Grade 8 student at Prince George secondary also took first place in the 200m dash, edging out a runner from Langley in a photo finish.
Other Prince George athletes in Kamloops were Maddie Pilling, Carolina Hiller and Rebeka Kidd of College Heights secondary, Hannah Donovan of Duchess Park and Carlee Campbell of PGSS. Pilling was first in the senior girls 400m dash while Hiller posted a personal best time in a second-place finish in the junior girls 200m dash.
Donovan picked up a pair of silver medals in the senior girls 100m dash and long jump while Kidd earned the bronze medal in the junior girls 400m dash. Campbell won silver in the junior girls triple jump and long jump.
Meanwhile, Kelly Road's Emma Balazs competed at the University of Oregon in Eugene in the annual Oregon Relays where the 17-year-old placed 11th in the 3,000m race in 10 minutes, 49.45 seconds (10:49.45) and was also 11th in the 1,500m race (4:51.56).
The Oregon Relays is the premier high school meet in the United States Northwest.
Balazs will attend the University of Idaho in the fall.
All the high school athletes are members of the Prince George Track and Field Club. The first meet of the track season, the Sub Zero meet, is scheduled for May 4 at Masich Place Stadium.
