Top Hawks not at nationals

CALGARY -- For the UNBC Northern Timberwolves, the road to gold may have gotten a little easier.

CALGARY -- For the UNBC Northern Timberwolves, the road to gold may have gotten a little easier.

The Timberwolves are the top seed at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association men's national basketball championship, which starts today at SAIT Polytechnic. Late Wednesday night, The Citizen learned that four key members of the second-ranked Humber College Hawks will not play in the tournament. The players -- Jadwey Hemmings, Daviau Rodney, Jeremy Alleyne and Mac Samuels -- violated team rules and did not make the trip from Toronto to Calgary. According to sources, the players were involved in an on-campus incident at Humber.

At last year's nationals in Prince George, Hemmings was chosen as the top defensive player and Rodney was selected to the second all-star team.

The Hawks face the host SAIT Trojans tonight.

UNBC opens the tournament this afternoon with a game against eighth-seeded Fanshawe College of London, Ont.
