Timberwolves end season on a high note

UNBC's pair of road wins in Calgary, an 86-79 victory Saturday that preceded a 51-59 victory Friday, wrapped up the Timberwolves' regular season to finish at 6-16 and fifth place in the Pacific Division.

Mount Royal remained at the bottom of the division at 2-20.

Saturday, UNBC had three players who tallied double-doubles.

Mercedes Van Koughnett, who graduates this spring, led the Twolves with 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Emily Kaehn, another graduating veteran, followed with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Sarah Robin had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jen Bruce rounded out the scoring with 13 points.

The Timberwolves held a narrow 39-38 lead after 20 minutes, and outscored the Cougars 29-23 in the third quarter alone to take the lead for good.

In Friday's 51-49 win over the Cougars, the Timberwolves went on a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter to take over the lead and hung on for the victory.

The Cougars led 24-17 at half-time but, thanks to a UNBC 10-0 run in the latter half of the third quarter, moved within one point of the Cougars. Bruce tied the game and then helped UNBC move ahead for good when she sunk two consecutive three-pointers. The Cougars clawed back to within one point of the lead, but UNBC held on.

Bruce finished the game with 15 points, while Kaehn led the way in scoring for the Timberwolves with 16 points.

In CIS Canada West men's action, the Timberwolves earned a split with the Cougars.

UNBC lost 113-81 Saturday after securing their fifth win of the season Friday, a 76-54 victory against the Calgary squad.

Mount Royal finished season eight points ahead of UNBC with record of 9-13, while the Twolves fell to 5-17.

The Cougars ran out to a 60-36 half-time lead, and outscored UNBC 53-45 in the remaining 20 minutes.

UNBC had two players reach double-doubles - Franck Olivier Kouagnia with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while fifth-year veteran Charles Barton notched 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jibreel Stevens was next with 12 points.

Barton and Billy Cheng led the way in UNBC's 76-54 win Friday night with 18 and 16 points respectively.

The Timberwolves scored 13 unanswered points to begin the second half to take a 39-26 lead. They extended it to 51-42 in the fourth quarter and Mount Royal could not capitalize on any of their chances.
