Sunday's Ethan Blacker Memorial U13 Tier 1 hockey championship final was so evenly matched that it needed a shoot-out to determine the winner.
The Citizen Orange Tigers scored early in the game to give them a 1-0 lead that held until the halfway point of the third period when the Evolve Sport and Cycle Gators potted a goal of their own to tie the game. The Gators thought they got the go-ahead goal with a few minutes left in the third period but the refs waved that one off and ultimately the buzzer sounded on a 1-1 tie. A five-minute 3-on-3 overtime solved nothing despite some good chances on both ends of the ice so with the score still tied after 65 minutes, a shoot-out was needed to decide the champion.
The Gators missed both of their shots in the shoot-out and the Tigers scored on their two attempts which sent the players over the boards throwing their sticks and gloves into the air in celebration, winning the Ethan Blacker Memorial U13 Tier 1 title by a score of 2-1.
