Kirk Thompson is no longer the bridesmaid.
The Prince George Spruce Kings goaltender was named the B.C. Hockey League's player of the week Monday after posting a pair of wins on the weekend. It's the first time the 20-year-old has received the honour since joining the Kings, though he has had several honourable mentions in the past three seasons.
Thompson posted his second BCHL career shutout in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Surrey Eagles, turning aside 38 shots including 18 in the final frame. Friday he was in the Kings' net for a 2-1 win over the Powell River Kings.
In the two games Thompson stopped 54 shots and had a .981 save percentage. The wins improved Thompson's record to 7-3-1 this season.
Thompson gave credit to his teammates for making his job easier on the weekend.
"It finally worked out for me and I owe it to all the guys on the team," said Thompson. "They blocked a lot of shots for me this weekend especially on the penalty kill. You can't ask for more than that especially with some key players out of the lineup."
The Kings were without captain defenceman Trevor Esau who is recuperating from a back injury.
Thompson also gave credit to his goaltending coach Blake Buckham for helping him achieve the award.
The Kings hit the road this weekend for a pair of Mainland division games against the Langley Rivermen, Friday, and the Coquitlam Express, Saturday.
