The PG Open is set to make its return to the hard courts at the Prince George Tennis Club this weekend.
The tournament, June 13-15, will feature between 25 to 30 players sering and volleying in men's singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
"We just moved [to our new location] and we're really happy to host the Open again," said PG Tennis Club coach Kristian Kiland. "We didn't have one last year, so this should be pretty good."
The Prince George Tennis Club relocated to its new digs adjacent to the Prince George Golf and Curling Club in May.
The men's open singles draw includes former PG Open champion Andrej Vdovenko; Kiland, 19, who competes at the collegiate level at Doane College in Nebraska and James Nearing, a former college player from Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. who's just moved to Prince George. Other players include former club pro and vice-president Jim Condon (Kiland's older brother) and current head coach Nolan Schwab.
"It's unlikely we will have a ladies draw because of a lack of competitive women in Prince George," said Kiland. "Our No. 1 lady Susie Walker will likely play in the 4.5 men's event."
Walker will team up with Nancy Condon (Kiland's and Condon's mom) in the 4.5 men's double draw.
Kiland, a Kelly Road secondary graduate who just completed his first year as a chemistry major at Doane, is coming off a second-place finish, his best-ever in the Lakeview Heights Open tournament recently in Kelowna.
This weekend, players can test their game in three different skill categories: the 5.0-plus (Open) for elite players; the 4.5/4.0 category for solid intermediate and advanced level players and beginners who are just learning the game (3.5 and down).
The registration deadline is this Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. Players will then be seeded and the draw will be made prior to the first serve on Friday.
