They scored their first goal in Canada West -- and held the lead for the majority of the game -- but the UNBC Timberwolves didn't have the legs to hold on for their first win.
Saturday afternoon at North Cariboo fields, the UNBC women's soccer team fell 3-1 to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The Timberwolves had a 1-0 advantage heading into the second half but suffered an own goal off a Saskatchewan corner kick in the 66th minute and then started to run low on fuel while the deeper Huskies continued to look strong. Saskatchewan was rewarded with a penalty-kick opportunity and goal from Daniela Fuenzalida in the 82nd minute and quickly got an insurance marker off the foot of Jenelle Zapski.
Sidney Roy had the history-making first goal for the Timberwolves. The first-year striker from Burnaby broke UNBC's scoring ice in the 16th minute when she finished off a feed from teammate Sydney Wilson.
With the result, the T-wolves slipped to 0-4-1 on the season and the Huskies bumped their record to 3-1.
In men's action, also at North Cariboo fields, UNBC dropped a 2-1 decision to the Trinity Western University Spartans. The Timberwolves tied the score at 1-1 early in the second half, the goal by Sourosh Amani, but gave up the winner with about eight minutes left.
On the winning goal, Brayden Gant got his head on a ball that had been fed in beautifully from the sideline. Gant's header beat UNBC keeper Mitch McFarlane, who had charged out of his net to try to break up the play.
Mitchell Rohla opened the scoring for the Spartans 15 minutes into the first half.
With the loss, the Timberwolves dropped to 0-5. Trinity, meanwhile, improved to 4-0-1.
Both UNBC teams will be in action again on Sunday. The women will face the University of Regina Cougars at noon and the men will complete a doubleheader with the Spartans. That game will kick off at 2:15 p.m.
