T-wolves out of playoffs

One point out of possible six was not nearly enough to prolong the playoff hopes of the UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team.

One point out of possible six was not nearly enough to prolong the playoff hopes of the UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team.

However, the playoff picture is a lot more rosy for the Trinity Western University Spartans, UNBC's opponents in a pair of weekend CIS Canada West games in Langley. The Spartans beat the T-wolves 3-0 on Friday and tied UNBC 1-1 on Saturday, which means TRU still has a shot at finishing ahead of the Fraser Valley Cascades. The Spartans (4-6-2) will have to beat Calgary and Lethbridge this weekend to pass Fraser Valley and lock up the final Pacific Division berth.

After this weekend, there's no tomorrow for The T-wolves (2-7-3), who will finish off their second CIS season with a pair of home games Saturday and Sunday against Victoria.

Cheona Edzerza redirected a pass from teammate Tyson Hunter for UNBC's only goal of the weekend, 41 minutes into Saturday's game in Langley. Brayden Gant replied for the Spartans at the 63-minute mark. TRU outshot the T-wolves 19-17.

Friday's game was delayed by UNBC's late arrival due to dense foggy conditions that enveloped the province and the low-visibility conditions persisted during the game. Jarvis Ambaka, Denny Serifovic and Nathaniel Turner scored for the Spartans on T-wolves goalie Ty Venhola, whose team was outshot 37-12.

Meanwhile in Saskatchewan, the UNBC women lost both of their games, finishing the season last in the league with a 1-8-2 record. Sunday in Saskatoon, the host Saskatchewan Huskies (8-2-2) set a new team record for points in a season with 26 after a 3-0 win over UNBC. Jenelle Zapski, Daniella Fuenzalida and Nicholle Morrison all scored on UNBC goalie Jordan Hall, whose team was outshot 29-6.

The T-wolves were coming off a 1-0 loss to Regina on Saturday. Tayler Firth scored the game's only goal 25 minutes in to seal the win for the Cougars (5-5-2). Stephanie Possberg had to make just one save to earn her first shutout of the season.
