T-wolves flat in Edmonton

The MacEwan University Griffins scored 31 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 81-34 victory against the UNBC Timberwolves Friday night in Edmonton.

It was the Griffins fourth-straight victory in the women's division of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Canada West Explorer Division and they now improve to 7-2.

The Timberwolves, who won their first game of the season Nov. 29 prior to the Christmas break, fall to 1-8 and remain in last place of the division.

UNBC ran out to a solid start in the first half of the game, scoring 18 and 13 points in the first and second quarters respectively.

They only trailed the Griffins 34-31 at half-time.

In the third quarter, MacEwan held the T-wolves to six points and outscored UNBC 31-11 in the fourth quarter.

First-year forward Vasiliki Louka led UNBC with 14 points and six rebounds.

Kylie Pozniak followed with seven points.

The Griffins had three players reach double digits in scoring - guard Kendall Lyon (18), forward Megan Wood (17) and Kelly O'Hallahan (14).

In men's action Friday, the Griffins snapped UNBC's two-game winning streak with an 85-77 win.

Rhys Elliott, Billy Cheng and Franco Kouagnia led the way in scoring for the Timberwolves with 15 points each.

The Griffins improve to 4-5, while the Timberwolves fall to 3-6.

Ryan May was MacEwan's top scorer with 22 points.

Both the men and women's squads clash again tonight in Edmonton.

The Timberwolves return home Jan. 16 and 17 to face the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.
