Seeking their second Canada West men's basketball win of the weekend in Winnipeg, the UNBC Timberwolves were stopped well short of their intended goal Saturday by the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.
All 12 Wesmen scored points, which added up to a 83-62 victory over the visiting T-wolves on opening weekend of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) season.
Steven Wesley led the way for Winnipeg with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Travis Krahn put up 16 points for the home side. Fifth-year forward Charles Barton, who collected a game-high 20 points for UNBC in a 77-71 win Friday over the Manitoba Bisons, was held to 14 points in a losing cause Saturday.
Jeff Chu (12 points), Franck Olivier Kouagnia (11 points) and Devin McMurtry (10 points) also hit double figures for the T-wolves, who trailed 41-33 at halftime. Daniel Stark had eight rebounds for UNBC.
With the win, Winnipeg improved to 2-0, while UNBC is now 1-1.
Earlier Saturday in the women's game, Merecedes Van Koughnett, a fifth-year guard/forward scored 13 points for UNBC but it wasn't enough to derail the Wesmen, who posted their second win of the season, a 75-49 triumph over the T-wolves.
Skylar Boulanger, a first-year post, was tough for T-wolves to contain, picking up 14 points and 10 rebounds. Megan Noonan chipped in with 11 points 11 rebounds and four assists, while Stephanie Kleysen hit for 13 points and Alyssa Grant sunk 11 points for Winnipeg (2-0).
Emily Kaehn pumped in 10 points and added four steals for the T-wolves.
The Wesmen led 41-24 heading into the intermission.
UNBC (0-2) started the weekend Friday in Winnipeg with a 73-69 loss to Manitoba.
