They haven't won a regular season game in almost four year, but the UNBC Timberwolf women's soccer team came close to stealing a win against a Canada West powerhouse.
Despite being outplayed for most of the game Sunday in Calgary, the Timberwolves (0-4-1)carried a 1-0 advantage into the 81st minute of their game with the Dinos (4-0-1). The Dinos tied the game at 1-1 and then potted the winner off a free kick in the fifth minute of extra time for the 2-1 win. The extra time was added after a lengthy delay earlier in the day after the T-wolves Jessica Manning suffered a broken nose and needed medical attention on the field.
Tessa Miller and Jordan Smith had the goals for the Dinos. Smith set up Miller for the tying goal and then it was Miller's free kick that went off Smith's head for the winner.
Jordan Hall made six saves in the UNBC net, while Samantha Chang-Foidl stopped five balls in the Dinos' net. Chang-Foidl was beaten in the 26th minute when Jessica Erickson opened the scoring for the T-wolves after a pass from Sydney Hall.
Saturday the T-wolves earned the first point of the season in a 1-1 tie in Lethbridge against the Pronghorns (0-3-2). Lethbridge had a 1-0 lead at the half on an unassisted marker by Kate Shellenberg. Sydney Hall tied the game for the T-wolves in the 63rd minute off a corner kick set up by Tianna Pius.
In their inaugural Canada West season the UNBC women finished with a 0-9-3 record, including a 2-2 tie with the Pronghorns.
Next week, the lady T-wolves play host to the Trinity Western University Spartans (1-1-2) on Friday, 7 p.m., and the UBC Thunderbirds (2-0-2) on Sunday, noon.
