Junior football teams wanted Brandon Deschamps.
They're not going to get him.
Deschamps, a Grade 12 student at Kelly Road secondary school, is going to make the jump straight from high school to university football. And he's going to do it with one of the most successful teams in Canada, the UBC Thunderbirds.
"For most guys up here, you have to play junior football and then go to university from there," said Deschamps, a 17-year-old running back who started out in the Prince George Minor Football Association five years ago. "It was always a dream to be able to go straight to university if I wanted to."
Deschamps was being pursued by several B.C. Football Conference clubs, including the Chilliwack Huskers, Okanagan Sun, Vancouver Island Raiders, Victoria Rebels and Kamloops Broncos. But, when the Thunderbirds contacted him last week, he knew right away where the next phase of his playing career would begin.
