Betty Ann Shiels has won so many PGGCC ladies club titles she's lost count.

"I really thought it was 13," said Shiels, relaxing on the patio of the Prince George Golf and Curling Club after capturing her 16th club championship Sunday.

The perennial champion was hotter than the sun's rays on the front nine during the second day of the tournament, shooting a one-under par on the front nine, capped off by a birdie on the eighth hole. Shiels ended the day with a three-over par 75 to give her a two-day gross total of 156.

"It was a very good round, my best of the year so far," said Shiels. "That will keep my handicap down for a while."

Shiels went into the weekend with a handicap of eight, but expects it will fall by a point or two.

After a pair of bogies on the 11th and 12th holes, Shiels said she thought she had lost her game, but things picked up when she made par on the next two holes.

The first PGGCC ladies club championship was played in 1939. There were 22 ladies contending for the title this year. Everyone finished the two days of golf relatively happy with their scores.

"The weather was fantastic and that helps the scores because the ball flies better when it's warm," said Shiels.

After Day 1 on the links, Shiels was tied for the lead in Flight 1 with Laurel Clark at 81 (nine over).

Clark said she played her best round of the season Saturday and was decent in the final round.

"I thought I played pretty steady, boring, Sunday," said Clark. "I had a couple bad holes on the front nine, but after that it was good."

Clark shot 88 on Sunday, which, she said was on par with her handicap.

Both women said they planned to take part in the Ladies Simon Fraser Open, Aug. 9-11 at the PGGCC.

Flight 2 was won by Mary Germaniuk with a two-day gross total of 181, while Gayle Magrath was the gross winner for Flight 3 at 202.
