Sometimes, a tie is just as satisfying as a win.
That was certainly the case for the UNBC Timberwolves women's soccer team, which battled the University of Winnipeg Wesmen to a 0-0 draw Saturday in Winnipeg. Both clubs were playing their first game in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association but the Timberwolves were clear underdogs. The T-wolves were coming off back-to-back winless seasons at the B.C. college level, while the Wesmen hadn't lost a game the past two years in the Manitoba college league.
Canada West is part of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, which offers the highest-level of competition in the country.
"It was a fantastic start to the season and a great start in CIS," UNBC coach Andy Cameron said of Saturday's result. "We played some really nice soccer in the first half. We hit a crossbar on a free kick and created some chances. In the second half we played against the wind and showed some determined defending to hang on to the tie."
The T-wolves will be back in action Sunday in Winnipeg against the University of Manitoba Bisons.
