The Prince George Spruce Kings management team is going prospecting in April.
The current team might still be hunting down the Royal Bank Cup at that time but it's never too early to try to round up new recruits and with that in mind the Spruce Kings will host a three-day spring prospects camp, April 11-13 at the Coliseum.
The camp will give prospective players a chance to showcase their individual talents while playing with their scrimmage teams in game-type situations. Over the past three seasons, 15 players on the current roster have been signed by the Spruce Kings as a result of their performances in the spring camps .
"The Spruce Kings Prospects Camp became a turning point with my junior career," said Chad Staley, who leads the team in scoring with 22 goals and 46 points in 44 games. "Coming to Prince George and seeing what the hockey, the fans and the city were all about let me know that this was where I wanted to play. There are lots of opportunities here that simply weren't available anywhere else."
The camp is open to players aged 15-19. Players will receive five ice teams during the weekend. The best-performing players will be selected for the the Top Prospects game on Sunday, April 13.
"Selected players will be invited to attend our main training camp in August and those we identify as top prospects will be offered cards to play for our team directly from the prospects camp," said Spruce Kings general manager Mike Hawes.
Registration for the camp is now being accepted online through the Kings' website, sprucekings.bc.ca or at the team office at the Coliseum. Space is limited and spots will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Kings (25-15-2-2, second in the Mainland Division) will be in action at the Coliseum this Saturday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (3 p.m.) when they host the third-place (22-18-1-3) Coquitlam Express.
