The Powell River Kings established early momentum and handed the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings a 2-0 loss on Friday night.
In the B.C. Hockey League game -- the Spruce Kings' first of the new year -- Powell River outshot Prince George 21-2 in the first period and 39-16 overall.
Despite all those shots in the opening 20 minutes, Powell River scored just once, the goal by James Neil at the 14:29 mark. Early in the second period, Evan Richardson added to Powell River's lead. There was no scoring in the third.
Jonah Imoo was the winning goaltender and a busy Kirk Thompson took the loss.
With the result, Powell River improved to 15-15-2-4 and Prince George slipped to 17-11-1-5.
Friday's game was the first of a three-game southern swing for the Spruce Kings. Tonight, they'll skate against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and on Sunday they'll take on the Nanaimo Clippers.
