Hockey is never far beyond the sports horizon.

It's now mid-June and the NHL is still at least a week away from determining the next Stanley Cup champion. And in less than three months, the Prince George Spruce Kings will start playing games that count for points in the B.C. Hockey League standings.

The Kings will be in Chilliwack along with the 15 other teams in their league for the Bauer BCHL Showcase, Sept. 6-8. Each team will play two regular season games that weekend, an opportunity for NHL scouts to see all the league's players strutting their talents in the two rinks of Prospera Centre to launch the 2013-14 season.

The Spruce Kings open with a game against the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Sept. 7, which counts as an away game for Prince George, then will take the ice the following day in what will be considered a home game against the Nanaimo Clippers.

For a complete schedule of the Showcase games, go online to bchl.ca. Tickets are available through the Chilliwack Chiefs through email at [email protected] or by calling (604)392-4433.
