Jamie Huber proved he was a sniper last season in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League when he scored 33 goals and 80 points in 49 games for the Listowel Cyclones.
He whipped another tornado Wednesday night in Grande Prairie in his debut with the Prince George Spruce Kings, scoring two goals to lead the Spruce Kings to a 6-5 preseason win over the Grande Prairie Storm.
Huber's power-play goal with six minutes left gave the Kings 6-4 lead and they hung to beat their Alberta Junior Hockey League opponents by the slimmest of margins.
Tanner Campbell picked up a goal and and two assists for the Kings, while Travis Schneider, Ethan De Jong and Ben Poisson also scored. The Storm offence was supplied by Alex Brisson, who had two goals and an assist, with single goals from Erik Olsen, Ron McDonald and Prince George Cougars draft pick Logan Mazerolle, who also added an assist.
Liam McCloskey and Stefan Wornig combined to make 20 saves in net for the Spruce Kings, who fired 30 shots at Storm goalies Derek Gooyen and Ben Laidlaw.
The Storm will travel to Prince George for preseason games tonight (7 p.m.) and Saturday (7 p.m.) against the Kings at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.
The Kings open the B.C. Hockey League season at home next Friday against the Merritt Centennials.
To get closer to finalizing their opening-day roster, the Kings re-assigned four players Thursday.
Forward Devin Sutton and defenceman Kevin Fillier, both 17-year-olds, were sent to the Cariboo Cougars major midget team. They will be in action this weekend at CN Centre when the midget Cougars stage their training camp.
The Kings also sent 16-year-old forwards James Gordon and Rob Raju to the 100 Mile House Wranglers of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The Wranglers are the defending provincials and Western Canadian junior B champions.
Sutton played last season for the Cariboo Cougars, while Gordon and Raju were part of the Coast Inn of the North Cougars team which won the Tier 1 midget provincial championship.
