After earning three of a possible four points in their weekend series against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, the Prince George Spruce Kings are back on the road this week heading for Seattle.
The BCHL Showcase will be played this week at Kraken Community Iceplex and the Spruce Kings are involved in two of the 17 games.
The showcase gathers all 17 teams in the league in one rink to provide an opportunity for college and pro scouts to see everybody in a four-day junior hockey extravaganza.
Prince George will be there Wednesday at 10:50 a.m. to face the Powell River Kings. Then on Thursday the Spruce Kings have a 4:40 p.m. date with the Nanaimo Clippers.
They’ll conclude their trip in Trail Saturday night against the Smoke Eaters.
This past Saturday, the Spruce Kings ended a four-game losing streak when they beat the Silverbacks 5-3 in front of a crowd of 749 at Kopar Memorial Arena.
Defenceman Trent Ballentyne, in his first BCHL game since joining the Spruce Kings last week from the Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL), opened the scoring and goals from Alex Coventry, Skogen Schrott, and Scott Cousins put the Prince George ahead 4-1 after two periods.
Kilian McGregor-Bennett added to the Kings’ total in the third period before Marcus Broberg and Nick Wellenreiter responded for Salmon Arm to make it close.
Ryan Sanborn made 36 saves in the Prince George nets to earn his first career BCHL victory.
The Silverbacks topped the Spruce Kings 4-3 in overtime Friday. JJ Monteiro banked a sharp-angle shot in off the skate of Prince George forward Kazumo Sasaki 2:48 into OT.
Saturday’s win moved the Spruce Kings (2-3-3) into seventh place in the Interior Conference.
