The Prince George Spruce Kings held their annual players award banquet last weekend to honour members of the 2012-13 B.C. Hockey League team. There were more than 200 players, staff, volunteers, friends and family members at the Coast Inn of the North for the event.
Award winners were:
Kirk Thompson - regular season MVP
Trevor Esau and Coltyn Hansen - playoff MVP
Kevin Guiltinan - most inspirational
Cameron Lawson - most dedicated
Chad Staley - most improved
Karan Toor - rookie of the year
Trevor Esau - defenceman of the year
Coltyn Hansen - leading scorer and plus/minus player of the year awards
Bryant Christian - seventh player
Jake LeBrun - scholastic player
Bill van Helvoirt and Tom Baratta - volunteer of the year
Spruce Kings captain Trevor Esau was also the first recipient of the Muchalla Family Bursary, honouring former captain Sam Muchalla, given to the player who is considered to embody all of the core values of the team. Esau also received the inaugural Steel Man of the year trophy to reward his willingness to block shots. The 20-year-old had 254 blocked shots in the regular season and another 25 in the playoffs.
Shayne Morrissey received both the Craig Dzuiballe Memorial award for outstanding community service and the CNC Challenge Cup fan favourite player of the year trophy.
