Hockey and academics go hand in hand with Prince George Spruce Kings forward Ty Gagno, and the B.C. Hockey League is taking notice.
Gagno has been selected for the BCHL’s High School Player of the Month award for the month of January.
The 18-year-old native of Langley scored two goals and set up three others in 10 games in January. Gagno had a two-point night and was the game’s first star, setting up the game-winning goal, Jan. 8 in a 5-0 win over the Cranbrook Bucks.
He now has seven goals and seven assists in his rookie BCHL season.
He’s also a star in the classroom. Gagno is a Grade 12 student at Prince George Secondary School and recently received a 100 per cent grade in his 20th century world history class and a 95 per cent mark in English 12. He’s received As in nearly all of his other courses this school year.
Gagno joined the Spruce Kings June 1, 2021 in a trade from the Chilliwack Chiefs, which also brought his older brother Brody, a forward, to Prince George in exchange for the rights to forward Andrej Kovacevic and future considerations.
Before he came to Prince George, Ty played the 2019-20 season for the Burnaby Winter Club, which has produced a long line of Spruce Kings players over the past decade. He also skated for Yale Hockey Academy and Delta Hockey Academy.
To be eligible for the BCHL academic award, players must be 18 or younger and be attending high school full-time classes. The award is based on in-class and on-ice performance.
The Spruce Kings are on the road this weekend for games tonight in Salmon Arm, Saturday night in Penticton and Monday afternoon in Vernon.
