Since he joined the team as an assistant coach in 2005, Mike Hawes has been part of the Prince George Spruce Kings.

His roots in the community-owned B.C. Hockey League team are about to grow even deeper now that he's signed a three-year contract extension as general manager, which carries through the 2017-18 season.

"Under Mike's leadership our organization has enjoyed stability unmatched since joining the BCHL," said Spruce Kings president Tom Bohmer, in a team release. "To secure the leadership for our group moving forward is the foundation for continued success and a run at a championship."

Hawes coached the team for two seasons, including their silver-medal finish at the 2007 Royal Bank Cup. He was the assistant general manager for four seasons before being named GM in November 2010.

"I am a very proud resident of Prince George having grown up in the city," said the 44-year-old Hawes. "I understand what it means to live in the north and understand what the Spruce Kings mean to the hardworking people of Prince George. I take a lot of pride in what I do with the Spruce Kings, and I work hard to put a team on the ice that our fans can be proud of every night."

The Kings begin their 19th season in the BCHL on Sept. 19 at the BCHL showcase in Chilliwack. Training camp at the Coliseum starts Aug. 29.
