Spruce Kings defenceman Kai Greaves announced Tuesday he's committed to a scholarship agreement with Princeton University.

Prince George Spruce Kings defenceman Kai Greaves has officially joined the Ivy League.

The 20-year-old announced Tuesday he’s signed a scholarship commitment to play next season with the Princeton University Tigers.

"It's a school where not only do you get a lot from the hockey side but also the education side of it, which is super important to me," said Greaves.

Greaves, a six-foot-two, 204-pound native of Cambridge, Ont., joined the Kings prior to the start of the 2022-23 season in a trade from the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and went on to collect 27 points in 454 games, He’s earned himself a spot in the top pairing on defence through three games this season.

“We are very proud of Kai. He and his family are very deserving of this achievement,” said Kings head coach Alex Evin. “He has put in a ton of work this summer, and we are hoping that he keeps developing and has a great final season before attending Princeton next fall.”

After drawing a Thanksgiving weekend bye, the Kings return to action in the B.C. Hockey League tonight, when they start a three-game roadtrip in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings (1-1-1-0-0) have played just three games this season and find themselves looking up at the rest of the Interior Division, ranked eighth out of eight teams.

A regulation win in Merritt would pull Prince George to within a point of the Cents (3-3-0-0-0, sixth in Interior).

The Spruce Kings also play Wednesday in Penticton and Friday at West Kelowna.
