Spruce Kings add a Giant

If Cole Todd has as much success as a junior hockey player as he did in his midget days, the future of the Prince George Spruce Kings is in good hands.

After celebrating two B.C. Major Midget Hockey League titles with the Vancouver Northwest Giants, Todd has signed a letter of intent to bring that winning attitude to the junior A ranks in the B.C. Hockey League next season with the Spruce Kings.

Todd, a six-foot-one, 175-pound forward from North Vancouver, played all but one of the Giants' 40 regular season games in 2012-13, collecting 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points and 86 penalty minutes. He also picked up a goal and five assists in eight playoff games.

Todd is looking forward to working with Kings head coach Dave Dupas, who has guided the Kings into the BCHL playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

"I was really excited to find out that the team was interested in me," said Todd, in a team release. "This is a great opportunity for me to move up to the next level, I really like their style. [The Spruce Kings] play a physical style, finishing checks and leaving it all out there on the ice."

In addition to their league success, Todd and the Giants captured the prestigious Mac's Triple-A Midget Tournament title with an overtime win over Carolina in the final in Calgary on Jan. 1.

Todd's season ended last weekend in Burnaby, where the host Giants had their TELUS Cup national title hopes dashed for the second year in a row by the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs, who swept the best-of-three Pacific regional playoff series.

"We are very excited with the commitment of Cole to our program," said Kings general manager Mike Hawes. "He's a very hardworking, skilled forward who skates extremely well. He loves to play the body at every opportunity. Our fans will enjoy watching Cole play for the Spruce Kings as he plays the game the right way."
