T-wolves forward Loukas named athlete of the week
Still buzzing from posting back-to-back wins for the first time in their Canadian university sports history, the UNBC Timberwolves women's basketball team has another accolade to celebrate.
Third-year forward Vasiliki Loukas became the first T-wolves athlete to be named ArcelorMittal Dofasco U Sports female athlete of the week.
Loukas, an environmental studies student from Athens, Greece, collected 14 points and 15 rebounds to pace UBC to an 89-82 win over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack last Friday. In Saturday's rematch, a 68-57 T-wolves' victory, Loukas put up 22 points 13 rebounds and three blocks. She led all players with a combined 68 minutes of court time in the two games.
The weekend success marked the first time in three seasons the T-wolves have defeated their Kamloops-based rivals.
Loukas is the sister of UNBC men's team forward Vaggelis Louka.
Bowling
Black Diamond shines at zones
Female bowlers from Black Diamond Lanes rolled to gold in all three age categories at the zone championships.
Thanks to their performances, five-pin players Kyra Thurston (bantam), Jesslyn Arnett (junior) and Kassidy Johnson (senior) all advanced to the Youth Bowling Canada provincial singles championships, set for the Lower Mainland in early March.
Zones were held at Black Diamond on Sunday. Thurston finished with a five-game total of 903, Arnett scored 1,201 and Johnson won with a 1,222 total. Johnson edged Black Diamond's Lezzyl Aquino (1,193) for top spot even though Aquino threw a 339 in one of her games.
In the boys zone tournament at Nechako Lanes, Oliver da Siliveria of Quesnel took the bantam title while Williams Lake brothers Ben Airey and Alex Airey claimed the junior and senior crowns. Da Siliveria threw a five-game total of 907, while Ben Airey and Alex Airey scored 1,177 and 1,446 respectively. Alex Airey had two huge games - a 344 and a 355.
The three boys will also compete at provincials in March.
Judo
Double gold for Frizzell
Local judo athlete Ioan Frizzell fought to the top of the medal podium in two divisions at a tournament in Burnaby last weekend.
Frizzell, from the Hart Judo Academy, was golden in the under-16 and under-18 boys categories, both at -46 kilograms. Clubmate Lochlan Young also battled to gold, his in the U16 -66kg class.
Several other HJA members also met with success on the mat. Silver medals in various categories went to Isaac Kamstra, Kimiko Kamstra and Asher Young, while Koen Heitman, Tula Moore, Gabe Paterson, Maxwell Young and Asher Young all brought home bronze medals. Matthias Schenk earned bronze in two divisions - U16 boys and U18 boys, -55kg.
Taylor Schaus of the Prince George Judo Club also competed at the tournament and won a bronze medal in the U21 men -60kg class.
Special Olympics
Players set to test floor hockey skills
Special Olympians from Prince George and Quesnel will participate in a floor hockey tournament on Saturday at the John McInnis Centre. The day will start with a skills event at 10:30 a.m. and will continue with games at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
For both cities, floor hockey is a new addition to the sporting menu. According to organizers, Prince George has not had Special Olympics floor hockey for 15 years or more.
