For the first time in five years, a provincial softball champion will be crowned in Prince George.

On Thursday, the board of directors of the Prince George Minor Girls Softball Association announced it was the successful bidder for the Under-16 bantam B girls provincial championship tournament. The event, expected to bring together 16 teams, is scheduled for July 25 to 27, 2014.

The winner will play for a Western Canadian title.

Last season, a local Under-12 C team ran to provincial silver in Trail.

Prince George last hosted a provincial softball tournament in 2009, at the Under-12 B level.

Back in 2000, a local midget team won provincials and moved on to Westerns.
