Snow, city strike postpones oval event

Too much snow, labour unrest and warming temperatures have put the season-opening event of the Exhibition Park ice oval on hold.

Too much snow, labour unrest and warming temperatures have put the season-opening event of the Exhibition Park ice oval on hold.

Today was to be the day the Ice Oval Society invited public skaters to the 400-metre oval track to try out speed skates, sip on hot chocolate and watch competitive skaters from the Prince George Blizzard Sped Skating Club in action.

But with snow expected to continue overnight Friday into Saturday morning and strike action set to begin for unionized city employees from two CUPE locals, the event was postponed and will be rescheduled.

However, the oval will be open for public skating once the snow stops. The cost to use the ice is $2 for individuals and $5 for families.
