It's the most prestigious women's golf tournament in the region. It tees off Saturday at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club.

The Ladies Simon Fraser Open, which has 80 entrants this year, gets started at 8 a.m. The two-day tournament will resume on Sunday, with the same start time.

Betty Ann Shiels, a five-time winner of the event, is the defending champion. Last year, she edged local golf legend Kathy Mears by one stroke. Shiels also claimed Simon titles in 1991, 1998, 2006 and 2008.

Other contenders this weekend could be Lana Ryan and Janice Lazzarin, who tied for third place in 2009. Two junior-aged players -- Kirstin Jorgensen and Carlie Whitwham -- could also add some drama on the leaderboard.
