Jag Seehra had a bye, then climbed into the ring to say goodbye to one more obstacle in his path to a senior national boxing title.
Seehra, a 24-year-old Inner City Boxing Club member, scored a unanimous three-round decision over Eric Taylor of Edmonton in a 60-kilogram bout Tuesday night at the Elite Canadian Championships in Regina.
"It was a great match for Jag, there was no doubt through the whole thing," said Bob Pegues, Seehra's Inner City coach and B.C. provincial team head coach. "He dropped him down to the canvas and gave [Taylor] an eight-count."
Seehra moves on to the medal round and will fight tonight against Quebec provincial champion David Gauthier, a former youth national champion. The winner will advance to the gold-medal final against winner of today's semifinal bout between Alex Rynn of Calgary and Lucas Bahdi of Ontario, the 2012 youth national champion.
"There are no easy fights here but we're not overly worried about it," said Pegues. "Right now he's guaranteed a bronze medal."
Toby Ibidiro of Surrey (64 kg) and Sarah Hagaight-joo of Maple Ridge (52 kg) have also advanced to the medal round.
