Seehra knocked out in Regina

Prince George boxer Jag Seehra was knocked out of his semifinal bout at the Canadian Elite (senior) Championship this week in Regina.

Prince George boxer Jag Seehra was knocked out of his semifinal bout at the Canadian Elite (senior) Championship this week in Regina.

The 23-year-old lightweight (60 kilogram class) fighter was favouring his right side after injuring his ribs in his first match of the week and his opponent David Gauthier noticed and managed to pin Seehra against the ropes for an early second-round knockout, according to Team B.C. head coach Bob Pegues.

"He caught Jag with an overhand right, knocking him out for for the win," said Pegues.

Medical officials examined Seehra after the fight and determined he didn't suffer any head trauma from the knockout, said Pegues, meaning he won't need to go on the 30-day watch list. Good news, since Seehra - who won the bronze medal in the 11-fighter category in Regina - is on track to try to regain his national team spot at the Final Team Selection (FTS) tournament, during the week of Nov. 20 in Quebec City.

Seehra was on Canada's B team but lost his spot at the FTS in January 2012. Because he was on the team previously, Seehra received an automatic berth in the 2013 FTS event.

In Regina, Seehra had a bye in the first round and then won his second round fight by unanimous decision.

Pegues said despite the fact most of the Team B.C. boxers are new to the national scene they've done fairly well, picking up three medals as of Friday, with most of the fighters who obtained wins over B.C. fighters going on to win the gold medal in their weight class.

Next for Team B.C. is a training camp in Kelowna during the Nov. 11 long weekend to prepare for the FTS for the youth, junior and any elite boxers who want to practice.

* Pegues also gave an update on his other Inner City Boxing Club fighter Kenny Lally, who was preparing Friday to leave Kazahkstan, where he lost a first-round fight at the International Boxing Association world championship last week. Lally will also be in Kelowna as he prepares for the FTS and maintaining his spot on the Team Canada A team.
