The Scotiabank peewee female Cougars were in danger of withdrawing from Jasper without a win.
But in their last game of a weekend tournament, their investment in hard work paid off in victory.
The Cougars, a rep team from the Prince George Minor Hockey Association, took on Calgary for third and fourth place and skated to a 3-1 triumph. Prince George also clashed with Calgary in its opening game and lost that one 5-4, so getting the 'W' was extra sweet.
"We really should have beat Calgary in the first game," said Cougars coach Brett Hickey. "We really outplayed them but they managed to bang home a few."
In the rematch, Katy Wendling notched a pair of goals for the Cougars and Braxtyn Shawara had the other one. Colby Wilson -- the only goaltender on the Prince George roster -- was solid between the pipes.
In the 5-4 loss to Calgary, Shawara fired a natural hat trick for the Cats and Aspen Vassallo had a single goal.
In their second game, the Cougars dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Albert. Only Jadyn Hickey was able to squeeze a puck past the St. Albert goalie.
Next, the Cats fell 6-0 to Edmonton.
The tournament was the first of the year for the Cougars.
"Generally, the girls played hard and they're learning," Brett Hickey said.
Other team members are Jessica Herdman, Justine Guillet, Hannah Cockle, Emmelin Leclerc, Miranda Lutes, Rylei Blacker, Malena Pillipow, Mishayla Christensen, Olivia Delisle, Camryn Scully and Christy King. Jay Guillet and Kevin Wilson round out the coaching staff.
The Cougars are off this weekend and will head to Kamloops the following weekend for their next tournament.
