Supertrak BMX riders are about to gear up and tear up the track for charity Friday night.
It's the Race for Life with all proceeds donated to the B.C. Children's Hospital.
"Prince George is one of the top two tracks for fundraising for the hospital," said event co-ordinator Lorrie Breeden. "All [BMX] tracks around B.C. support the B.C. Children's Hospital. Last year we raised just under $4,000 and we're hoping to meet or exceed that this year. Anybody can race, they don't have to be a member of our club. They can even race their mountain bikes if they don't have a BMX bike. Adults are welcome."
All riders must wear long pants, long sleeves and a helmet. Flip-flops are a no-no. They also have to sign a medical waiver and pay a $10 donation for the B.C. Children's Hospital.
They'll do three full races and receive a certificate for their accomplishment.
Registration is open from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and racing follows around 7 p.m.
The Race for Life kick-starts a weekend of racing at the local track at Carrie Jane Gray Park.
Club riders will compete in a double points race Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
On Sunday it's the double-points provincial championship race featuring riders as young as 18 months old on their strider bikes, all the way to 45-year-olds in novice, intermediate and expert.
Registration is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and racing follows with qualifying heats prior to the main event.
Points earned by riders go toward qualifying for the provincial final Aug. 24 in Victoria.
Prince George is gearing up to host a BMX Canada national series event - the Northern Lights Nationals Aug. 15-17.
The club is putting out the call for volunteers to help with the concession and barbecue.
"We're expecting between 1,000 to 1,200 riders from B.C. and the Western U.S.," said Breeden, adding the city last hosted the event in 2010.
