The new Duchess Park secondary school isn't even open yet. But, already, it has been chosen as the host venue for a major tournament.

Next Dec. 2-4, the triple-A girls high school volleyball provincial championship will be held in the school's gymnasium. Sixteen teams, including the host Duchess Park Condors, will battle for B.C. gold.

The tournament is seen as the perfect way to christen the new gym, one part of a building that came with a $36 million price tag.

"It will be fantastic to be able to start off the school with a provincial tournament," said Richard Mintenko, head coach of the Duchess Park senior girls volleyball team. "We can showcase the school, as well as the athletes and the commitment to volleyball in the north."
