One week from today the Prince George Gymnastics Club will play host to more than 550 athletes at the 2013 Artistic Gymnastics B.C. championship.
During the three-day event (April 5-7) at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre there will be more than 30 champions crowned in both boys and girls artistic gymnastics in the province. In addition to 25 members of the Prince George club putting their best foot forward some of the top tumblers in B.C. will take to the mat including Zachary Clay and Shallon Olsen.
Clay is a Canadian team member and the reigning junior men's champion from Twisters Gymnastics in Abbotsford, while the 12-year-old Olsen, of Omega Gymnastics in Coquitlam, captured her second junior women's Elite Canada title this year and was Sport B.C.'s 2012 junior female athlete of the year.
"Hosting the Gymnastics BC championship in Prince George is an amazing opportunity for our club," said Lucia Fendelet, the president of the Prince George Gymnastics Club. "Not only will it give everyone a chance to see some world class gymnastics but it will also raise the profile of Prince George as a sporting event host."
The provincial championship will provide spectators with an opportunity to see some of the gymnasts from 40 clubs across the province who will potentially represent B.C. at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George.
Team BC will be picked after the provincial championship sending the top gymnasts to Ottawa for the 2013 Artistic Gymnastics championship.
The Citizen will feature several of the Prince George Gymnastics Club gymnasts starting Saturday leading up to the championship.
