The Prince George Spruce Kings announced defenceman Colton Cameron will take the helm as team captain next season.

Cameron, 20, will be the 22nd captain in the franchise’s history, since joining the BCHL in 1996. He’s served as the team’s alternate captain for the past two years.

“Going into my fourth year as a Spruce King, I’ve experienced nothing but good things,” Cameron said in a statement issued by the Spruce Kings on Wednesday. “Not only do I like living in Prince George, but being with a professional, hardworking, and respectable organization is something I’m very lucky to be a part of. Now to be asked to be the captain of such a team, I feel very honoured.”

Cameron takes on the big ‘C’ from Kolton Cousins, who captained the team this season.

“This team has a long list of great captains before, so I have some big shoes to fill,” Cameron said. “The players that will be returning will make the role even more enjoyable as they are all such a great group of guys who put their heart and soul into everything we do as a team. They too will soon realize how awesome our fans are and how great it is to be a Spruce King.”

Originally from Cloverdale, B.C., Cameron is committed to join Bentley University’s hockey program in Waltham, Mass. when he ages out of the Spruce Kings next year. During his four years with the Spruce Kings he’s won several team awards, plus an Indigenous Youth Sport award in 2021.

“Colton will be an excellent leader for our group,” Spruce Kings head coach Alex Evin said. “He epitomizes what it means to be a Spruce King and leads by example. The way he plays, he’s always sacrificing himself for the team’s success above all else. He’s admired by teammates and coaches, and respected by opponents, he’s certain to serve as a great ambassador for the Spruce Kings and all of Prince George.”
