Prince George ski crosser Gavin Rowell 22nd in World Cup race

Skiers back on course Friday in Innichen, Switzerland

Gavin Rowell of Prince George finished 22nd Thursday in a World Cup ski cross event in Innichen, Switzerland.

The 24-year-old Rowel placed third in his eighth-final. Only the top two finishers in each heat advance.

Rowell was coming off a career-best seventh place finish last week in Arosa, Switzerland.

The former Prince George Alpine Ski Team member is in his fourth season competing at the World Cup level.

Jared Schmidt of Ottawa won Thursday’s men’s race. Nicolas Raffort of France won silver and Duplessis Kergomard of France claimed bronze.

In other Canadian results, Carson Cook of Edmonton was sixth, Recce Howden of Chilliwack was eighth, and Kevin Drury of Toronto was 16th. The race drew 50 entries.

In the women’s race, Sandra Naeslund and Fanny Smith of Switzerland finished 1-2  respectively, while Hannah Schmidt of Ottawa took the bronze medal.

Last week in Arosa, Schmidt and her brother Jared each topped the medal podium in their races.

In other Canadian women’s results Thursday, Marielle Thompson of Whistler was sixth, Brittany Phelan of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was eighth and India Sherritt of Cranbrook was ninth, in a field of 18.

The women and men will back for another race on the Innichen course on Friday.
