Carter Hauk of the Prince George-based Cariboo Cougars is the BC. Elite Hockey League’s choice for the U-17 triple-A humanitarian award.
In his first season with the U-17 team, the 15-year-old Prince George minor hockey product had demonstrated his willingness to give back to the community, at the rink and way from it.
In addition to his commitment to his team, Hauk is in his third season as an on-ice official for minor hockey games. He shares his knowledge teaching kids in the Prince George Minor Hockey Association’s Learn To Skate program.
He also fills a volunteer role as a stick boy for the WHL Prince George Cougars.
Hauk is active in high school athletics at Prince George Secondary School and volunteers his time as a scorekeeper in tournaments the Polars host.
He played hockey last season for the double-A U-15 North Central Zone Bobcats and endured a winless season, while also drawing extra duty with the U-15 triple-A Cougars.
Nominees for the award in each of the four divisions are chosen by their team staff and the list is then sent to the BCEHL general managers who decide the award winners.
The award criteria includes minor hockey mentorship/volunteerism, other hockey-related volunteerism, non-hockey community engagement and intangible qualities such as leadership, character and integrity.
The awards are handed out twice a year.
Other Prince George team members nominated for the award in their respective divisions were: Female U-18 triple-A - Payton Planetta, Northern Capitals; U-18 triple-A – Mason Loewen; U-15 triple-A - Cole Chapman, Cariboo Cougars.
