The Prince George Cougars have signed 16-year-old goaltender Madden Mulawka.

The six-foot-one, 186-pound netminder comes to the Cats from the Maple Leaf Athletic Club Beverly Optimists in the Alberta Elite Hockey League’s U18 AAA Division. In 22 games with the Optimists he posted a 3.50 goals-against average and .898 save percentage. Mulawka also played three games for the Blackfalds Bulldogs in the Alberta Junior Hockey League this season, picking up two wins.

“Madden had a very strong year with MLAC, Team Alberta, and with Blackfalds in the AJHL,” Bob Simmonds , the Cougars’ director of scouting, said in a statement issued Tuesday. “Simply put, he makes saves and gives his team a chance to win every night. His signing really solidifies our goaltending depth. We’re excited to welcome Madden and his family to the organization.”

Mulawka also played three games for Team Alberta during the 2021 WHL Cup championship in Red Deer, Alta., posting two wins and helping the team on the road to a silver medal.

Mukawka, who is from Edmonton, was the Cougars’ fifth-round draft pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.

The Cougars hit the road this week to wrap up the regular season. They will take on the Kamloops Blazers on Friday and the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday.
