Posse rides off with bronze

School's out and the math simply didn't add up the Prince George Posse peewee lacrosse team.

School's out and the math simply didn't add up the Prince George Posse peewee lacrosse team.

The Posse finished the Canada Day tournament round-robin portion tied with the Thompson Ravens for second place, each with 3-1 records, but the tiebreaker favoured the Ravens and Prince George lost its chance to play for gold.

While that was a bitter pill to swallow there was a happy ending for the Posse sharpshooters.

Their hardware arrived Monday, after the Posse beat the Quesnel Wildfire 5-3 in the bronze-medal game.

"It's bittersweet, I think we could have been in the final but we lost that one game and with the tournament format we only gained a half-point for that game and slipped to bronze," said peewee Posse coach Blake McIntosh.

"The kids played well and bronze is nothing to knock ourselves down about. It would have been nice to make the final. The bronze-medal game was a hard-hitting affair and we pulled it out. Their goaltender kept them in it."

Jaron Wagner scored two goals to lead the Posse offensively.

The Posse opened with 12-5 win over Vermillion (Alta.), then hammered Rockyview 19-1, and the Calgary Hornets 7-2, before losing 10-6 to California. Okotoks, Alta., went undefeated in the tournament, beating Thompson 7-4 in the gold-medal game.

Two other Prince George teams played in the 92-team Canada Day tournament.

The Posse midgets played for bronze in Calgary and lost 7-5 to the Innisfail (Alta.) Phantoms.

The Posse went 3-1 in the round robin, including wins over the Czech Republic, 5-1, Winnipeg 5-4, and High River 9-4, and a 6-2 loss to the Red Deer Chiefs.

The Prince George novice B Posse went winless in the round robin, losing to Calgary 9-2, St. Albert 11-1, California 10-4, and Leduc 4-2, but saved its best for last, defeating the Calgary Hornets 5-2 in the seventh-place game.
