After two days of competition at the 2012 BC Summer Games in Surrey the Caribou-Northeast Zone 8 team has collected 10 medals, including two gold.

Prince George swimmer Kathryn Chrobot took gold in the girls 200-metre backstroke with a time of two minutes, 27.40 seconds (2:27.40). The region's other gold came from Para-equestrian Tristiana Allwood of 100 Mile House.

Prince George Special Olympians picked up four medals in the pool with David Dunn and Jasmyne Morgan each earning silver and bronze medals. Dunn took silver in the men's 100m individual medley (1:28.53) and bronze in the men's 100m backstroke (1:33.33), while Morgan's silver came in the women's 100m IM (2:21.70) and her bronze was in the 100m backstroke (2:07.32).

Dawson Creek race walker Leighton Wolf took silver in the boys' 1,500m event

The bronze medals were won in rowing - girls doubles skills competition - canoeing (see below) and swimming. The swimming medal came courtesy of Prince George's Jordan Ozcan in the boys 100m breaststroke (1:15.56).

Zone 8 was in third place in the medal count after two days of competition behind Vancouver-Squamish and Vancouver Island-Central Coast both of whom had 12, including four and five gold medals, respectively.

Rough start for soccer boys

The Zone 8 boys soccer team kicked off the BC Summer Games in wet, dissatisfying fashion.

The Cariboo-North East club, formed by 12-and-under players from Prince George and Williams Lake, lost its opening game 4-0 to Zone 5 (Vancouver-Squamish) Friday in Cloverdale. The Zone 5 all-stars led 3-0 at the half and added one more goal in the second.

Prince George's Colburn Pearce simply stated that his side "could've started stronger."

Later Friday, the Zone 8 boys faced Zone 3 (Fraser Valley).

Today, the Cariboo-North East squad will take on Zone 6 (Vancouver Island-Central Coast). The playoff round will start tonight and medalists will be determined on Sunday.

In girls action, the Zone 8 squad will try to get their first win today after after dropping a pair of games Friday by scores of 7-0 and 6-1.

Bronze for canoers

A splash was made Friday that had nothing to do with Mother Nature's tearful mood.

The Cariboo-Northeast Zone 8 canoe/kayakers opened the 2012 BC Summer Games in Surrey by grabbing hold of a bronze medal at the Pitt Meadow Paddling Club.

The Prince George paddlers didn't mine the rainy conditions as they earned bronze in the six-person outrigger canoe. Members of the boat were: Gemma Hansen, Tomas Bonafine, Daniel and Steven Houston-McMillan and Meryeta O'Dine. A stern-master was assigned to the canoe to complete the six-person team.

Lacrosse boys boxed out

It wasn't a great start for the Zone 8 box lacrosse team from the Cariboo-Northeast region as they were thumped in their opening game 17-3 by the Zone 4 team from Fraser River-Delta. The Zone 4 team was coming off a loss themselves earlier Friday when they fell to the Vancouver Island-Central Coast (Zone 6) team. The Zone 8 boys fell to 0-2 after dropping their second game 17-2.

Hockey team rolls to win

Kirk Hards coached the Zone 8 boys inline hockey team to a 6-2 win in their first round-robin game Friday against Fraser River-Delta. There are six teams competing for inline hockey gold. Cariboo-Northeast wraps up its round-robin play with games against Vancouver-Squamish (Zone 5) and Fraser Valley (Zone 3). Unfortunately the Zone 8 team's luck didn't hold and they fell to 1-1 with a 6-3 loss in their second game.

Volleyball court provides mixed results

The Zone 8 girls volleyball team produced a 2-1 record after Friday. The all-Prince George roster opened the round-robin portion of the games with a straight sets win in the best-of-three action. Cariboo-Northeast moved to 2-0 after earning a 2-1 sets win but then were swept in their final game 0-2. The boys team dropped all three of their round-robin games and have a 1-6 sets record.

The BC games continue until Sunday.
