Wheelchair basketball tipped off for northern high school students Friday as the first division champions were crowned.

In the intermediate division of the three-on-three basketball, the PGSS Polars added another trophy to their school case with a 20-8 win over the St. Mary's Sloth in the all-day tournament at the Northern Sport Centre. Both teams entered the final with perfect 3-0 records.

The Sloth were dominant in the round robin despite the fact Grade 7 students were playing against high school competition (Grades 8-10). Before the final St. Mary's had outscored their opponents 36-2.

Sloth player Ryan Hampe said the PGSS players had a few advantages.

"The PGSS players were taller and had longer arms than most of the other kids we were playing which made it easier for them to rebound," said Hampe. "But it was fun and challenging to play them."

The six players on the Polars team, comprised of the top two intramural teams at PGSS, also benefited from the fact four of them played hockey together with the Prince George midget tier 1 Cougars team last season.

"It makes it easier to communicate with each other," said Todd Bredo.

The other players on the intermediate champion Polars team were Isaiah Berra, Josh Deans, Brogan O'Brien, Markus Plamondon and Marius Wolki.

In the junior game (Grades 6-7) the Nukko Lake boys doubled up the St. Mary's Huskies 12-6.
