The PGSS Polars defeated Nechako Valley secondary 56-46 in the final to capture the 2014 Cougar Classic Saturday night.
PGSS Grade 10 point guard Tyrell Laing paced the Polars to a team-high 36 points in the final of the senior boys basketball tournament at College Heights secondary's court.
It was the Polars first tourney victory of the season.
Bulkley Valley Christian beat Kelly Road secondary 66-65 for bronze.
Dawson Creek's South Peace secondary finished in fifth place, followed by Duchess Park in sixth, host College Heights in seventh, and Quesnel's Correlieu secondary in eighth.
The Polars opened with a 61-55 victory over South Peace where Laing collected 34 points. They advanced to the semifinal to beat Bulkley Valley 72-50 - Laing netted a team-high 41 points.
"The entire team played well," said PGSS head coach Nav Parmar. "We played three good games and we built some confidence going forward."
Going forward means they're now preparing for the city semifinals tomorrow night.
The No. 1-ranked D.P. Todd Trojans host the fourth-ranked Duchess Park Condors at 6:15 p.m. while the second-ranked Polars host No. 3-ranked Kelly Road at 8 p.m.
The Condors are the defending city champions.
The two winners will battle for city bragging rights in the finals on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Northern Sport Centre at 8 p.m.
"We had an early practice today [Monday] at 7 a.m. and our focus is now on Kelly Road," Parmar said.
