Polars Classic goes to Roadrunners

Mitch Duthie led his Kelly Road Roadrunners to the championship Saturday at the senior boys annual PGSS Polar Classic. The Roadrunners beat North Peace Secondary of Fort St. John in a best-of-five final 3-1 (26-28, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-12).

Mitch Duthie led his Kelly Road Roadrunners to the championship Saturday at the senior boys annual PGSS Polar Classic.

The Roadrunners beat North Peace Secondary of Fort St. John in a best-of-five final 3-1 (26-28, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-12).

Duthie was named MVP for the tournament, while his teammate, Ben Cooke, was Kelly Road's all-star selection. North Peace named Jayden Roberts its all-star.

Both teams played marathon four-set semifinal matches before heading straight into the final.

The College Heights Cougars B team swept the Correlieu Secondary Clan of Quesnel 3-0 (25-16, 29-27, 26-24) for the bronze medal.

The Roadrunners received a bye to the quarterfinal after finishing on top of Pool A with a 2-0 record, with the Cougars (1-1) and Mackenzie (0-2).

Duchess Park Condors were 2-0 in Pool B, but dropped the crossover match Saturday morning to the Clan, putting them on the relegation side of the draw. The Condors finished sixth.

PGSS Polars were second at 1-1 and Chetwynd ended up third at 0-2.

The Polars ended the tournament in fifth place, while Chetwynd was eighth.

North Peace was 2-0 in Pool C, with the Clan at 1-1 and Cedars Christian Eagles (0-2).

Cedars Christian tied the Condors for sixth place, while Mackenzie ended up tied with Chetwynd.

The other all-star selections were: Nolan Hanson (CHSS); Cole Blizzard (Correlieu); Dylan Sandy (PGSS); Nathanael Pawluk (Duchess Park); Jeff Pudlas (Cedars); William Noftal (Mackenzie) and Randy Spoakley (Chetwynd).

SILVER FOR COUGARS

The College Heights Cougars A team finished second at the George Elliot Coyote Invitational senior boys volleyball tournament near Vernon on the weekend.

The Cougars played well with setter Warren Bachand and right-side hitter Austin Cromarty named to the all-star team.

In the round-robin play, the Cougars defeated Kelowna Secondary 22-25, 25-22 and 15-13 and Rutland Secondary 25-9, 25-17 and 25-12. In the quarterfinal, College Heights beat Okanagan Mission 25-13, 25-17 and 27-25. The semifinal went four sets, as the Cougars beat Mount Boucherie 25-18, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-21.

In the final, Mennonite Educational Institute Secondary of Abbotsford defeated the Cougars 23-25, 25-23 and 18-25.
