Poised for first place

If they win one of their final two games, the UNBC Northern Timberwolves will clinch their first-ever regular-season championship. The UNBC women's basketball team would also wrap up a free pass through the first round of the B.C.

If they win one of their final two games, the UNBC Northern Timberwolves will clinch their first-ever regular-season championship.

The UNBC women's basketball team would also wrap up a free pass through the first round of the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association playoffs and earn the most favourable match-up in the semifinals.

On the flip side of the coin, if the T-wolves lose twice to the Vancouver Island University Mariners, they could drop all the way down to third place and miss out on the first-round playoff bye given to the top two teams. At the same time, two VIU victories could move the Mariners to the top of the standings.

So, for both teams, much is on the line. All the drama will unfold today and Saturday at the Northern Sport Centre. The opening tip-off for both contests is at 6 p.m.

The first-place T-wolves currently sit at 15-1, while the third-place Mariners come in at 13-3. Within the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association, UNBC is No. 4 and VIU is No. 8.
