The UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team picked up its second win of the season Saturday with a 2-1 win in Lethbridge against the Pronghorns.
Tofa Fakunle broke a 1-1 tie in the final minute of regulation to give the T-wolves the victory over their Prairie division cousins in the Canada West conference of the CIS. It was the rookie's second goal of the season for UNBC.
With the win the T-wolves now have a 2-5-2 record and are fourth in the Pacific division, trailing the third-place Fraser Valley Cascades (4-6-1). The top three teams in each division will make the playoffs. The T-wolves have a loss and tie against the Cascades this season.
Saturday, the T-wolves opened the scoring in Lethbridge seven minutes in when Brett Bobier finished off a three-way passing play with Alan Zhao and Cheona Edzerza. It was Bobier's second goal of the season.
The Pronghorns tied the game at 1-1 about 10 minutes later on Domenic Ohuegbe's first of the season.
Goalkeepers Tyrone Venhola for UNBC and Tyler Boast for Lethbridge kept the game scoreless until the end when Fakunle broke the deadlock for the T-wolves. The Pronghorns out shot the T-wolves 19-11 as Venhola needed to make seven saves and Boast stopped six balls from entering the net.
The T-wolves return to the pitch Sunday afternoon (2:15 p.m.) in Calgary to play the Dinos (5-4-1).
Playoff picture
The T-wolves have five games remaining, including Sunday's in Calgary, while the Cascades have three games left starting Sunday in Saskatoon against the Prairie division leading Saskatchewan Huskies (7-3-1). The Cascades lost 2-0 to the Alberta Golden Bears (5-3-2) in Edmonton on Sunday.
Fraser Valley wraps up its regular season this weekend at home when the Dinos and Pronghorns visit the Abbotsford university, Saturday and Sunday respectively. The Cascades have a bye the final weekend of the season.
Meanwhile, the T-wolves head to Langley on the weekend for a pair of games against the Trinity Western University Spartans (2-6-1) before hosting the Victoria Vikes (6-2-1), Oct. 26-27 in Prince George.
